In this paper, the "Shadow theory" is applied to the analyses of dielectric diffraction gratings to demonstrate the availability of the theory in such types of structures. A formulation based on the matrix eigenvalue is proposed to get a representation of diffraction amplitude at a low grazing limit of incidence. It is illustrated that the scattering factors (SF) defined in the theory correspond to the Green functions in the spectral domain from the electric or magnetic current sources.
