Summary: 
Break arcs were generated in a 48VDC/50A-300A resistive circuit. Two different contact opening apparatuses were used to generated the break arcs. One of them used a spring-based mechanism to separate electrical contacts. The other separated the contacts with constant speeds using a linear stage. Dependence of arc length just before extinction L on circuit current I0 was analyzed. As apparatuses independent results, the L tented to increase with increasing I0, but the increase of the L with respect to I0 tended to be saturated when the I0 was equal to 200A or larger. The characteristics of the shape of break arcs just before extinction are also explained, and the current I0 dependence of the shape of break arcs is discussed.
