Summary:
Magnetic recording technology has a long history beginning from 1898. The hard disk drives using perpendicular magnetic recording were commercialized in 2005 and they brought about a paradigm shift in the capacity. All of the industrial products were replaced with the new system by 2010. They became used in various fields such as TVs and computers. Even the cloud computing and the big-data were also produced based on them. The details of the perpendicular magnetic recording from its invention to realization and the impact on the society, and the integration of science and technology with the society are described.
