A miniaturized balanced mixer using multilayer MMIC technology is presented. It is proved that asymmetric lines can be 3-dB coupled lines and a stacked Marchand balun which consists of asymmetric coupled lines is realized. A quasi-millimeter-wave band balanced mixer is demonstrated using the stacked balun. The mixer achieves good performance with a die size of 1.56 mm2, local oscillator signal suppression of 47 dB, and conversion gain of -9 dB.
