Summary: 
We present a range-decomposed filter where the range of an image is partitioned into several bands which are smoothed independently, or only selected bands are smoothed. It is demonstrated with experiments that the selective smoothing of a noisy image outperforms the bilateral filter which smooths the whole range uniformly.
