Summary: In this paper, a hybrid multiple access scheme called VLF (Variable Length Frame access scheme) is proposed. In VLF, number of the terminals that share one timeslot is controlled by changing the frame length according to the intenseness of the packet generation load. Additionally we propose a retransmission scheme which we call it VLFX, in which the assigned slots are dynamically exchanged for efficient slot usage. Theoretical analysis and computer simulation are performed to evaluate throughput and delay characteristics. Compared to IEEE802.11 DCF and PCF, VLFX shows better performance in any condition of offered load, and it shows better robustness to propagation delay time.
