Summary: 
A laser µ-platform based on an 1.3-µm DFB laser is proposed and investigated as a practical light source to create an optical transceiver with a silicon photonics (SiP) platform. Since a lens-integrated surface-emitting laser (LISEL) is utilized for the laser µ-platform, a low coupling loss to SiP platform with a grating coupler (GC) was achieved by means of optimized design of both mode-filed size and emission angle of the light emitted from the LISEL. In this paper, the fundamental design of the laser µ-platform and its measured characteristics are presented.
